Chado is a relational database schema used to manage biological knowledge for a wide variety of organisms. It stands in relation to other biological sequence models such as GFF3, GenBank, BioSQL and BioPerl.

[edit] Database description

The database is built on top of a relational architecture, but importantly describes the biological entries and their relationships using terms from an ontology.

For example, the sequence module of the Chado schema describes each entry in the features table using terms in the sequence ontology (SO). Similarly, relationships between features in the SO are typed according to the OBO relationships ontology (OBO-REL). Features can be further annotated using terms in the Gene Ontology (GO). Database identifiers are handled by a 'general usage' module, and may be represented as URIs for compatibility with the LSIDs.

The Chado schema is used in the GMOD project.
